Camino Portugués

The Practical

"Portugal: A Land of Barking Dogs!"

The Camino Portugués goes from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela, a distance of 620 km. Much of the route follows the original Roman road that links Portugal with Spain. The Lisbon-Porto stretch has less support for pilgrims, and there is a lot of road walking and infrequent pilgrim accommodation. The way becomes more beautiful after Santarém (where you can take a detour to visit Fátima). The stages between the old Knight’s Templar town of Tomar and Coimbra (site of one of Europe’s oldest universities) are delightful. From Porto the way continues northwards crossing the rivers Lima and Minho where it enters Spain at Tui. It crosses the River Ulla at Padrón, the last stage before Santiago de Compostela.

2017 Issues of the Compostela

It is interesting to note the number of Compostelas issued by the authorities in Santiago for the year 2017 and comparing the different routes:-

  Route Number %
  Camino Frances 180,738 60.04%
  Camino Portugues 59,235 19.6%
  Camino Del Norte 17,836 5.92%
  Camino Primitivo 13,684 4.55%
  Camino Ingles 11,321 3.76%
Via De La Plata (Seville) 9,138 3.04%
  Portugues Coastal Camino 7,211 2.39%
  Fisterra-Muxia 665 0.22%
  Camino de Invierno 555 0.17%
  Total 301,036

Of those doing the Camino Portugués, the majority by far start from Oporto or Tui

Lisbon Metro

I used the Lisbon Metro to get to The Tivoli Hotel at Oriente, and also to go downtown to visit Lisbon Cathedral.
The latter involves changes at Alameda and Baixa-Chiado, before going on to the terminus at Santa-Apolónia
